Like one of my precedents by Helen Musselwhite I want to use flat layers to build up form.
I drew on drafting film to see what etching layered up might look like.
I made a card mock up to see how the 'tentacles' might cross each other.

I realised quite quickly that I wanted to work with acrylic rather than card because by melting I could have more control over curves and since my form from project 1 was partially inspired by spider-silk, a transparent material seemed more appropriate.
Here are three of my acrylic testing pieces, these were the three methods that worked the best. I ended up using the hair straightener because it gave me the most control.
Here is one of my extra pieces that I tested the hair straightener on. I heated the tendril then used kitchen tongs with baking paper over the ends to bend the acrylic.
