I'm not sure if my beetle will be able to be printed, I used the slice modifier to look at my model and for some reason the shapes that I brought over from SolidWorks are all hollow. Sometimes you don't realise that an idea won't work till you try it out, and I don't think my bug inspired idea will be do-able. And now that I look at it, I don't think it shows 'pattern' very well.

In 3ds
While working in 3ds Max I've found it helpful to have a 30x30mm cube in the scene, I also have a rod with the thinnest recommended width. I can just move this over to my form and compare it visually.
